Subwoofer
There is actually not much,which has changed. Whenever it comes to natural music reproduction, in most cases, a pair of stand-alone QUAD electrostatics will do it.
For the few exceptions, speakers developers from around the world are already having their solutions ready. The challenge always has been to adjust the subwoofer to work together with the electrostatics. Quickly it became obvious, that in any case the subwoofer needs to be a dipole. And it is necessary to have an active solution,which means to have an active crossover, that directs the music signal to separate amplifiers for subwoofer for ESL.
QUAD Musikwiedergabe took a closer look into it and developed their own solution. Carefully, they took the advantages of existing subwoofers and combined them with new possibilities of today's studio technology. The result is a technically very sophisticated solution, which is manufactured in three versions, each tailored to the electrostatic type.
ESL63 subwoofer, “the professional”
Well designed to function as a stand which brings the ESL63 in a lifted listening position and to work as a subwoofer in the same time.
ESL57 (QA) subwoofer, “the round shaped”
It comes without edges in a rounded shape. Without changing the position, due to the round shape the subwoofer can be optimized by rotating. This way, it is easy to adjust the subwoofer to fit in nearly every room. Not only prepared to fit with the 57 design, but also an ideal solution for third party electrostatics.
ESL63QA subwoofer, “the Elegant”
ESL63QA mostly can be found in high-quality facilities. Their owners have chosen the wood we made the cabinet from and they decided their individually colours for the front and rear grill. No need to mention that a subwoofer need to follow this demand. QUAD Musikwiedergabe therefore designed “the Elegant” in a way to hold the electrostatics as a stand. All needed technics is placed behind the electrostatics.
In practice, all three solutions assume the same responsibilities. The electrostatics no longer is forced to reproduce extremely low frequencies and the subwoofer will add deeper bass further down an electrostatic could do it. Sometimes a requirement of both, the recording engineer and the private music lover enjoying their music in a livingroom. In all cases, an active crossover makes sure, each amplifier will get the right signal. A built-in DSP module allows us corrections in the low frequencies to get the subwoofer well fitted in the system. "Inaudible" as a dynamic addition but an add on oft remendous natural reproduction in the deepest tones, as well as some acoustical classical instruments will perform.
